PCI Identity System

Story

“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.”
― Rainer Maria Rilke

Designing a visual identity system for an emergent initiative like Planetary Civics requires the patience of not giving answers but preparing a visual language that enables to live questions. In conversation with Politics of Tomorrow and RMIT Europe and Australia, the Dm Conversation Design Studio and Dm Civic Tech Studio designed a variable font at the centre of the identity system, which is in constant flux between disorder and order, question and answer.

Being a variable font, it can be made interactive on the website, animated on videos, and used in any state we consider adequate on print media. This is one example of how it could be set in the wordmark, but it is not the only way. The font is not only to be used for the wordmark. It should be used for all big text.

Secondary Font

The secondary font is Inter.

Inter is a variable font family carefully crafted & designed for computer screens.

Inter features a tall x-height to aid in readability of mixed-case and lower-case text. Several OpenType features are provided as well, like contextual alternates that adjusts punctuation depending on the shape of surrounding glyphs, slashed zero for when you need to disambiguate “0” from “o”, tabular numbers, etc.

The Inter project is led by Rasmus Andersson, a Swedish maker–of–software living in San Francisco. To contribute, see github.com/rsms/inter

Logos

When the wordmark set in the PCI font is becoming too small to be legible you have to use the logo.

If the full logo has to be used even smaller the variant below, without “Inquiry” can be used.

The folder with the logos contains vector files (SVG) and pixel files (PNG), both with transparent backgrounds. The files are the size of the protection zone indicated above.

The footer on the first page differs from the footer on the second page. On the second page, the small logo appears in the footer because it no longer appears in the header.
